Aliens with Ponytails

'Aliens with ponytails' vector drawing 'Aliens' is my favorite movie so I liked the idea of merging my girls with scurrying spider-like adolescent aliens - the older aliens and the mother with long, lithe bodies and sharp limbs. A dark fantasy world of creepy, icky, deadly girliness.

"Pledge" for All In for the 99%

"Pledge"
18x24"
acrylic, charcoal, ink on canvas

This painting was inspired by mom, who is an oncology nurse, and also after having taken part in a benefit art show this last weekend for my friend whose mom is dying of cancer and her insurance company has refused to pay for all of her treatment.

My mom's motto and advice to me has always been "don't get sick" - due to her first-hand knowledge of how wretched our healthcare system can be, with bureaucratic bean-counters making life-or-death decisions instead of doctors. This is something we all should be aware of and fight against, regardless of political beliefs. When you're lying there in a hospital bed you are at the mercy of a private system driven by greed and profit, no matter who you voted for.

This Saturday I'm excited to be taking part in All In for the 99% with a new painting. If you are as frustrated as I am by the unbelievable heartlessness and greed that seems to reign supreme in governing our nation (not to mention the ridiculous 'war on women' in our healthcare system) then please come and be a part of this great event.

Giraffe Girl

My new vector drawing "Giraffe Girl" for my Circus series.

Women are treated like circus animals.
We have to preen and pose and jump through hoops looking perfect our entire lives.
We are valued for our appearance, our uniqueness. How do set ourselves apart and also fit in at the same time?
That is the box we are made to fit into from the day we are born.
We are forever contortionists, twisting our bodies into unimaginable shapes, with no thought for our well-being.
We are malleable like clay, we are flexible to the point of self harm.

3x3 Illustration Directory out now

"Betty" and "Tomomi do Kazuko" are in the current 2012 3x3 Illustration Directory, out now.
Thanks to Charles Hively for including me.

Goodbye to One of the Oldest Women in the World - My Great Gramma Delma

My Great Gramma Delma passed today. She was one of the oldest women in the world. 114 years is a long time to spend on this planet. She was a painter and a teacher. She made the most amazing cinnamon rolls and painted purple cows and flower girls, landscapes, seascapes...
I am so happy I got to say goodbye and kiss her soft cheeks. I told her I am still following my dream of being an artist - drawing and painting and showing my work. She painted all the time for the joy of it. I need to remember that when I am discouraged, which is quite frequently.
I am re-posting the photos of her palette and art supplies that I have. I look forward to painting on her easel. Love you Gramma.

Acrobats

I am very excited to unveil my new digital drawing "Acrobats" from my new 'Circus' series.
This series explores themes of fearlessness, exhibitionism, perfectionism, hiding of one's flaws - and also exploiting one's individuality.
